In management the leadership is a key situation variable, it is determined by the qualities of leader and staff and by situation.
The notions “leadership” and “management” are not always identical, but most people do not correctly understand the core of their difference. In leadership there is nothing mysterious or secret. It is not a privilege of a charmed circle. Leadership is not obligatory more important than management, and they are not replaceable.
In reality the leadership and management in the company are two separate systems of actions, augmented each other’s potential. Each has its own functions and specific types of activity. For the success of the company in contemporary business world, which becomes more and more complicated and fast moving, it is necessary to master both.
In the widest sense, the leadership may be determined as an ability to manipulate other people in order to achieve a certain goal. Thus, the leader guides a way for an employee or a group of employees toward a certain goal. In business domain and in organizations, leadership is often set against management. Management is usually determined as “ability to fulfill the task, using other people”, whereas leadership is determined as “ability to do so that other people would want to fulfill the task”. Therefore, the leadership is closely connected with motivation development and with influence on other people.
You may determine the main point of a leadership and its difference from a management in organization, and also prepare an individual plan of leader’s competencies development, at the Practicum “Managerial leadership” the 2-3 of February and the 2-3 of March 2013.
